A. Ví dụ cách sử dụng in case trong tiếng Anh

Bạn xét tình huống sau:

– Geoff is a fooball referee. He always wears two watches during a game because
it is possible that one watch will stop.

Geoff là một trọng tài bóng đá. Ông thường mang hai đồng hồ trong một trận đấu vì rất có thể một cái bị hỏng.

– He wears two watches in case one of them stops.

Ông đeo hai cái đồng hồ phòng khi một cái trục trặc.

In case one of them stops = bởi vì có khả năng một trong hai cái sẽ ngưng chạy.

Thêm vài ví dụ về in case:

– Ann might phone tonight. I don’t want to go out in case she phones.

(= because it is possible she will phone)

Tối nay có thể Ann sẽ gọi điện thoại. Tôi không muốn đi đâu phòng khi Ann gọi tới.

– I’ll draw a map for you in case you can’t find our house.

(= because it is possible you won’t be able to find it)

Tôi sẽ cho anh một sơ đồ phòng khi anh không tìm ra nhà chúng tôi.

Ta sử dụng just in case khi khả năng xảy ra điều phỏng đoán là rất nhỏ:

Ví dụ:

– I don’t think it will rain but I’ll take an umbrella just in case.

(= just in case it rain)

Tôi không nghĩ là trời sẽ mưa tuy nhiên tôi sẽ mang ô phòng hờ.
(chỉ khi trời mưa)

B. So sánh in case và if trong tiếng Anh

In case khác với if. Ta dùng in case để nói tại sao một người làm hay không làm điều gì đó: ta làm một việc bây giờ để đề phòng một việc khác xảy ra sau đó.

in case

if

1. – We’ll buy some more food in case Tom comes. (= Perhaps Tom will come; We’ll buy some food now, whether he comes or not; then we’ll already have the food if he comes.) Chúng tôi mua thêm đồ ăn để phòng khi Tom đến. (= Tom có thể đến; chúng tôi sẽ mua thêm đồ ăn, dù anh ta có đến hay không; vậy chúng tôi đã có thức ăn nếu anh ta đến.) 2. – I’ll give you my phone number in case you need to contact me. Tôi sẽ cho anh số điện thoại của tôi phòng khi anh cần liên lạc với tôi. 3. You should insure your bicycle in case it is stolen. Bạn nên bảo hiểm xe đạp của bạn phòng khi nó bị mất trộm.

– We’ll buy some more food if Tom comes. (Perhaps Tom will come; if he comes, we’ll buy some more food; if he doesn’t come, we won’t buy any more food.) Chúng tôi sẽ mua thêm đồ ăn nếu Tom đến. C. Cấu trúc in case + thì quá khứ

Bạn có thể dùng in case (+ thì quá khứ) để giải thích vì sao một người nào đó đã làm điều gì đó:

Ví dụ:

– We bought some more food in case Tom came.

(= because it was possible that Tom would come)

Chúng tôi đã mua thêm đồ ăn phòng khi Tom đến. (= bởi có thể Tom sẽ đến)

– I drew a map for Sarah in case she couldn’t find the house.

Tôi vẽ cho Sarah sơ đồ phòng khi cô ấy không tìm được nhà.

– We rang the bell again in case they hadn’t heard it the first time.

Chúng tôi nhấn chuông một lần nữa phòng khi cô ấy không nghe thấy lần đầu.

D. So sánh in case of và in case trong tiếng Anh

In case of… là khác với in case. in case of… mang nghĩa là if there is… (nếu có …) thường được sử dụng chủ yếu trong các thông báo như trong ví dụ sau:

– In case of fire, please leave the building as quickly as possible.

(= if there is a fire)

Trong trường hợp xảy ra hỏa hoạn, xin hãy rời khỏi tòa nhà càng nhanh càng tốt.

– In case of emergency, telephone this number. (= if there is an emergency)

Trường hợp khẩn cấp, hãy quay số điện thoại này.

Bài 1. Barbara is going for a long walk in the country. You think she should
take:

1. It’s possible that Mary will need to contact you, so you give her your phone number.

2. A friend of yours is going away for a long time. Maybe you won’t see her again before she goes, so you decide to say goodbye now.

3. You are shopping in a supermarket with a friend. You think you have everything you need,but perhaps you’ve forgotten some. Your friend has the list. You ask her to check it.
